The NIHR Newcastle BRC is a partnership that brings together some of the world’s best researchers and clinicians from Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear (CNTW) NHS Trust, and Newcastle University.

The experience gained across the Partnership allows us to combine high quality research with operational delivery excellence to deliver maximum impact and return on investment.

This world-class environment was recognised in 2020 by the NIHR, NHS England and NHS Improvement award of Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) status to Newcastle Health Research Partnership. This is one of only eight Academic Health Science Centres (AHSC) in the UK.

CNTW is a highly research-active partner, and hosts the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria.

CNTW is one of the largest mental health, learning disability and neurorehabilitation NHS Trusts in England and has a significant research profile as one of the most research-active mental health Trusts in England. It leads and facilitates the delivery of research and innovation across the organisation and beyond into the wider health system.

It is regarded as research leaders in autism, affective disorders, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and dementia and is able to draw on some of the UKs best mental health and learning disability clinical academic researchers.

Collaborative Working

The NIHR Newcastle BRC sits at the heart of a world-leading research environment across the Newcastle Hospitals, Cumbria, Northumbria, Tyne and Wear (CNTW) Mental Health Trust and Newcastle University Partnership.

We work together with other partners in the North East of England building on existing BRC-focused translational ageing research infrastructure. The NIHR Newcastle BRC is central to partnership plans to develop the Campus for Ageing and Vitality site into a world-leading location for innovation and evaluation.

National Centres for Ageing and Data

NIHR Newcastle BRC works with national centres hosted by Newcastle University. The National Innovation Centre for Ageing is a £40M co-investment with UK Government. It brings together world-leading scientists, business and industry, health and care providers, and the public.
This is co-located with the National Innovation Centre for Data, a £30M centre which enables the UK to capitalise on data opportunities across sectors and grow the economy.
The NIHR Newcastle BRC also links with the NIHR Innovation Observatory, the national medical horizon scanning facility.

The NIHR in the North East and North Cumbria (NENC)

The NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre leads the North East North Cumbria (NENC) NIHR Infrastructure Group, developed initially to provide resilience and shared learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This brings together Directors and Managers of the region's NIHR funded research infrastructure including the Applied Research Collaborations (ARC), Research Support Service, Research Delivery Network (RDN), Commercial Research Delivery Centres, HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) and Clinical Research Facilities (CRF) as well as locally hosted national NIHR School for Public Health Research, Innovation Observatory and Policy Research Units (Healthy Ageing, Behavioural and Social Sciences).
