To deliver on this vision, we are committed to ensuring our research excellence is enabled by an inclusive environment that prioritises equality and diversity. Our leadership will provide a visible representation of this and through a collective and individual commitment, we will drive positive change and implement best practice. We see diversity as key to current and future excellence and inclusivity as its bedrock.
NIHR is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in everything it does and its Research Inclusion Strategy 2022 – 2027 seeks to ensure it collaboratively implements inclusive practice in its research, culture and systems. As part of its strategy, NIHR identified five themes which are illustrated below:
These themes have helped to inform our NIHR Newcastle BRC EDI strategy and plans.

The EDI Toolkit has been created for researchers, particularly people who lead research teams but it can be used by anyone who delivers or enables research. The resource is designed to support you to understand EDI issues in and around research.
Open EDI Toolkit
This initiative is a rolling call which aims to provide researchers across the BRC with the opportunity to request funds for specific activities to progress their research and support the BRC’s vision to transform lives through world-class research in ageing and multiple long-term conditions.
The BRC Bursaries aims to support activities across a number of areas including EDI and Research Inclusion activities.
