We are an exemplar of the positive impact world class translational research has on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of age-related disease now and in the future.
In the region, Newcastle Hospitals, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW), and Newcastle University are anchor organisations; creating and supporting a sustainable health system, while leading and influencing research delivery and policy, nationally.
The North East and North Cumbria region faces a range of social and economic challenges, of which poor health is a major contributing factor. As the population grows older and inequalities in healthy life expectancy expand, multimorbidity will become increasingly common.
The NIHR was established in 2006 to create a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals, provides world-class facilities and conducts leading-edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public.
Working in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients and the public, NIHR funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth. Its work focuses on early translational research, clinical research and applied health and social care research.

The Biomedical Research Building is a purpose-built site dedicated to improving healthcare for older people and is home to the NIHR Newcastle BRC as well as ageing research labs, businesses, and the Clinics for Research and Service in Themed Assessments (CRESTA) - an NHS facility for patients.
For clinicians and scientists working on research, the broad range of facilities available provides an excellent platform for creative interaction, putting patients and the public at the heart of research.
The Biomedical Research Building is on a site that includes the former Newcastle General Hospital. Newcastle University and partners have a vision to turn this 29-acre brownfield site into the UK’s first health innovation neighbourhood.
This Health Innovation Neighbourhood will be where world-class research comes together with business, government and local people to shape the future of health and ageing.
