Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Academic Lead for the Dementia, Mental Health and Neurodegeneration theme, Senior Lecturer

Dr Rachael Lawson is a Senior Lecturer and the Janet Owens Parkinson’s UK Senior Research Fellow leading the “Defining delirium and its impact in Parkinson’s Disease (DELIRIUM-PD) study” at the Translation and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. Her translational research programme aims to determine the optimal measurements and mechanisms underpinning neuropsychiatric symptoms and delirium in the context of Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementias, and how these conditions are associated with cognitive and motor decline. Her goal is to improve the recognition and management of these distressing symptoms and conditions, and to improve the quality of life and long-term health outcomes of people affected by Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementias.

Rachael has a wealth of experience leading and supporting PPIE across the theme, . She is passionate about making research accessible to all, including people with lived experience, carers, healthcare professionals and researchers. She aims to make research engaging, both as part of the Newcastle NIHR BRC and the Parkinson’s North East and Cumbria Research Interest Group (NEC-RIG), which she leads.
