Professor of Hepatology

Derek Mann is Professor of Hepatology with a research focus on chronic liver disease and cancer, both of which are age-related conditions involving an interplay between inflammation, cellular senescence, fibrogenesis and oncogenesis. His most recent work has investigated the role of neutrophils in liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma (HHC), in the latter showing that blockade of CXCR2 signalling brings about reprogramming of the HCC tumour immune microenvironment and enhancement of immunotherapy, this work now translated to the UK-wide trial CUBIC. Mann is a fellow of the academy of medical sciences in recognition of his work in the field of liver fibrosis. He serves as a grant panel member for MRC (PSMB) and Yorkshire Cancer Research as well as carrying out ad hoc reviewing for Cancer Research UK. He has held 2 MRC programmes, 2 CRUK programmes and 1 Wellcome Trust programme grant. His publication counts currently stand at 207 documents which have accrued 14,700 citations and h index of 70 (Scopus - as of 24th Feb 2025). He was a founding scientist of the Newcastle University spinout FibroFind Ltd and is currently serving as an executive board member of the company and its chief scientific officer.
