PhD Student
Starting her Biomedical sciences degree back in 2018 at Newcastle University, Jay developed an interest in neuroscience, prompting her to extend her studies through an MRes in Neuroscience. During the MRes, she focused on the unmet needs in diagnosing depression, which led her to further research through a PhD, funded by the NIHR. Her project aims to map the current pathway for obtaining a depression diagnosis at each tier of care, and to identify unmet needs in this process. She is conducting qualitative interviews with primary care clinicians, as well as psychiatrists, mental health nurses and patients to understand their perspectives of the unmet needs. Jay has also completed a scoping review of diagnostic tools for depression, to assess their diagnostic accuracy. Ultimately, she hopes her research will contribute to improving the experiences of patients with depression in the healthcare system by allowing for faster, more accurate diagnosis and therefore more timely treatment.
