NIHR Newcastle BRC PhD Student

Jack graduated from his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle University in July 2021 where he researched the effects of Streptomyces sudanensis in actinomycetoma infection under the supervision of Dr Andrew Watson and Professor Jefferey Errington. In December 2021, he began working as a leading pathology technician at Charles River Laboratories. Here, he worked on different projects, from spermatozoa analysis to using visual deep learning algorithms to develop cellular and tissue recognising applications for stained animal sections. He returned to Newcastle to start a Masters of Research in Immunobiology in September 2022. For his research project, he worked with Professor Simi Ali and Dr David Swan to investigate the role of S1P and IL-6 in ischemia reperfusion injury. Now as a Newcastle BRC PhD student working with Professor Catharien Hilkens, Professor John Isaacs, Dr Amy Anderson and Dr Venetia Bigley, his work focusses on the impact of different disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) on the generation and function of tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDC). With autologous tolDC therapies being trialled in autoimmune conditions, his project aims to understand how patients who have undergone DMARD treatment may have their capacity to generate tolDCs impacted in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
