NIHR Newcastle BRC PhD Student
Georgia is a second-year PhD student at Newcastle University within the Liver Disease Research Group (LDRG) headed by Professor Quentin M Anstee. She began her PhD after completing a Master of Research degree (MRes) in the topic of Medical Genetics preceded by a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) with honours in Biomedical Sciences. She is particularly interested in the underlying genetics of liver disease in a way that directly translates to a clinical setting towards better diagnosis and new therapeutics development. The primary focus of my PhD is Metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as NAFLD, a disease that currently affects 30% of people worldwide. Her PhD project aims to uncover molecular drivers responsible for the significant interpatient variability in disease outcomes that MASLD patients experience such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. To address this, she is conducting a deep-dive into the transcriptome and proteome across the full spectrum of MASLD to find new biomarkers that she hopes will directly help to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with liver disease.
