Gastroenterology Registrar

Chao is a Gastroenterology Registrar in the North East. She is currently taking time out of her specialty training to undertake a Clinical Research Post and is working within the group headed by Professor Chris Lamb. Chao’s research project is looking at Perceptions of patients and the public regarding Use of Biobanking, Large datasets, and artificial Intelligence in Clinical Research (PUBLIC). Chao is undertaking this study as a PhD at Newcastle University.

Large-scale, multi-omic data provides an unparallel opportunity to understand disease pathogenesis, natural history and treatment outcome. Samples may be obtained through academic research or NHS tissue routinely collected during healthcare interventions. These information form complex datasets. Artificial intelligence may provide novel approaches for research discovery using clinical and multi-omic data. Therefore it is essential to understand public perceptions regarding these research processes, to identify and consider ethical challenges and to determine ways of working in partnership with the public to maximise appropriate research potential.
