At the 3rd NIHR Newcastle BRC Academic Geriatric Medicine Workshop, held online today (Friday 19th March), experts in ageing research and patient care from Newcastle bring together a range of healthcare professionals to shine a spotlight on the academic Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
Researchers and clinicians from across the country will share insights on the value of working together, from a broad range of disciplines such as nursing, social care, physiotherapy, big data and frontline hospital services; conveying the message that by working together, we can provide the best care for older people, as well as bringing significant savings for the NHS.
Professor Avan Sayer, the NIHR Newcastle BRC Director who will open the event, comments:
Supporting the complex health needs of older people can be challenging and with the additional pressures brought by COVID-19, there has been an extra strain on resources. So it is even more important to focus health research on how to develop the most effective, efficient care. A collaborative approach across disciplines is clearly key to this.
The annual Academic Geriatric Workshop is a dedicated training and capacity building resource for clinicians, healthcare workers and researchers in geriatric medicine. Having been designed to take place in person when it first began, the event has now moved to a digital platform in-line with COVID restrictions, but has therefore benefited from attracting a wider geographical audience for their latest session; from Aberdeen to Devon across Great Britain, but as far as Canada and Saudi Arabia internationally.
