5 Things You Should Know About the International Sarcopenia Translational Research Conference

With less than a month to go until the first International Sarcopenia Translational Research Conference (ISTRC), here’s a few things you need to know.

Sarcopenia is a growing area of clinical and research activity, with a pressing need for more widespread diagnosis and development of treatment options. Great strides are being made in our scientific understanding of sarcopenia and the challenge now is to translate these advances into better care and treatment for older people.

The NIHR Newcastle BRC is leading the way on translating scientific understanding of sarcopenia into patient benefit. As a sponsor of the event, the NIHR Newcastle BRC also boasts several speakers alongside the impressive line-up of international experts in this area.

The virtual event on 10-11 June has a lot to offer, but we’ve rounded up the top five reasons to attend:

  1. Be part of a growing area of research. This being the first event of its kind is a huge step in fostering collaborations on a global scale. Attendance will bring you the latest in this area, as well as sharing the next steps for action.
  2. Interdisciplinary approach. The event has been curated to ensure that speakers and attendees come from a broad range of disciplines, with the goal being to develop effective internal and external collaborations across discipline boundaries, to advance understanding, diagnosis and treatment of sarcopenia.
  3. Global reach. A move to online hosting of this event has allowed extensive possibilities to network with colleagues from all over the world. So far, in addition to UK sign-ups, the organisers report registrations from Netherlands, Portugal, Hong Kong and Australia, as well as speakers and poster presentations from all across the world.
  4. Career development. In addition to the input from established experts, this event is a space for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to find out more about opportunities in this area. This will include small groups for ‘meet the speaker’ sessions, as well as hearing from 10 ECRs talking about their careers on the main stage programme.
