Senior research associate Emily Stephenson has won the Newcastle University Medical Sciences Doctoral Prize for her PhD thesis - a prestigious award that acknowledges the remarkable quality of research carried out during her doctoral studies and a testament to her hard work and dedication.

Following a successful viva examination, Emily was immediately admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy without any corrections.

Emily's research focused on investigating the immune system during development, inflammation, and infection, utilising cutting-edge single cell technologies.

She said:

"This research would not have been possible without the contribution of our collaborators to the work, as well as the kindness and generosity of the patients who donated their samples."

Emily was supervised by Professor Muzz Haniffa, lead for the NIHR Newcastle BRC’s Skin Disease, Oral Disease and Immunogenomics research theme, and Dr Laura Jardine, who is also a researcher in this theme.
