The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) recognises the most outstanding leaders within the NIHR research community. The Newcastle researchers Professor Lynn Rochester, Professor John Simpson and Professor Eileen Kaner are among the 21 reappointed NIHR Senior Investigators across the country.

NIHR Senior Investigators are among the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the NIHR and the most outstanding leaders within the NIHR research community. The award lasts for 4 years and funds research activities of up to £20,000 a year.

We are pleased to see three Newcastle-based researchers being reappointed for this prestigious award:

Professor Lynn Rochester

Professor Rochester leads major international consortia and interdisciplinary research groups, among which are the Mobilise-D Consortium and the Brain and Movement Research Group.

She is Co-lead of the Newcastle BRC Digital Health, Ageing Innovation and Inclusion Research Theme, which aims to use digital health technologies to provide harmonised approaches to early disease detection, monitoring and prognosis and widen access to research, clinical care and reduce burden in older people with MLTCs.

Their work centres around three research programmes: the Digital Biomarker Discovery Programme, the Digital Health Interventions Programme and the Digital Health Inclusion Programme.

As Professor of Human Movement Science at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University, she is also an honorary Consultant Physiotherapist at Newcastle Hospitals

Professor John Simpson

Professor Simpson was recently appointed as the new Programme Director for the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme, which is a partnership between NIHR and the Medical Research Council (MRC).

From April 2024, he will be the Co-Director of the NIHR Newcastle Healthtech Research Centre (HRC), which replaces the successful NIHR Medtech and In Vitro Diagnostic Co-operative (MIC).

Besides this, he is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Newcastle University and an honorary consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Newcastle Hospitals.

Professor Eileen Kaner

Professor Kaner is Director of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for the North East and North Cumbria and represents the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) on the NIHR Strategy Board.

She is Professor of Public Health and Primary Care Research at Newcastle University and her interdisciplinary research focuses on illness prevention in high-risk, vulnerable groups and involves participants at all stages of life.

Being a NIHR Senior Investigator means, they will contribute significantly to the NIHR by demonstrating research excellence, championing the integration of Patient and Public Involvement in research and helping develop the next generation of outstanding health and social care researchers.
