By Joan Bedlington MBE Lay member of Newcastle BRC Public Partnership Advisory Group (PPAG)

Having been involved with the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) since early 2020, I was excited to receive the invitation to this event. As a result of the pandemic, all the initial PPAG meetings which I attended were held virtually. Although there have been a few face-to-face meetings since then, this event held the promise of an opportunity to meet people from across the whole spectrum of the BRC. It did not disappoint…

The day began with various presentations from professionals, all very interesting and informative. Hearing about the history of the Newcastle BRC, the successes and the collaborations was fascinating. In true BRC fashion, patient and public involvement/engagement (PPI/E) was included in this session and a member of the PPAG was able to talk about their experience of being involved.

The presentations were followed by a host of activities in every corner of every space. Posters reflecting the research being undertaken by the various themes were on display. The amount of detail the researchers were able to provide on the posters was nothing short of amazing. Interactive experiences were also available; I took advantage of a grip test assessment and was pleased to learn that my results proved to be normal for a female of a certain age.

The enthusiasm and passion of the researchers and health professionals were palpable. From the outset of my involvement with the BRC, the principles of inclusivity and equality have been fundamental. As a lay member, I have been made to feel valued and my opinions, no matter how brutal they may have seemed at the time, have been respectfully considered. On the day there were so many people to speak to, to listen to and to learn from; I wish there had been more time to explore all that was on offer.

Such was the atmosphere at this event… I would defy anyone to come away without feeling proud to be part of the Newcastle BRC.

Thank you for the invitation and well done to everyone involved in organising the event.

Wishing you all continued success.
