NIHR Newcastle BRC EDI and PPIE Leads came together to take part in a Research Inclusion Workshop to discuss inclusion across the research lifecycle.
Kicking off the workshop, Professor Sophie Hambleton, BRC Academic EDI Lead shared an update about the BRC’s approach to Research Inclusion and looked forward to future opportunities for EDI and PPIE Leads to collaborate. Training, Education and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager Cissie Tsang informed EDI and PPIE Leads across our eight research themes about the wider NIHR Research Inclusion Strategy, how it aligns with the BRC’s strategy whilst also highlighting the importance of inclusion for our workforce.
Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Manager Judith McGuinness then led participants through a mini workshop. In smalls groups, BRC EDI and PPIE Leads discussed how they currently consider inclusion across the research lifecycle in their own research, what challenges they face and what actions they could take to ensure inclusion at each stage of the research lifecycle.
After sharing key findings from the discussions openly, Judith concluded the workshop by guiding them through research question and general PPIE considerations, participant recruitment, research methods as well as data collection, analysis and dissemination.
Research Inclusion Bursary
As part of our efforts to progress research inclusion, the NIHR Newcastle BRC is launching bursary that is open to all BRC Research Theme EDI and PPIE Leads.
Examples of initiatives and areas that may be funded include but are not limited to:
The expectation is that the requested budget for these activities will be low, typically no more than £3,000 per request. Funding will be awarded as a bursary. This should not be considered a research project award.
