In September, the Annual Combined Northern and Yorkshire Rheumatology Meeting took place in Newcastle. The meeting is a Joint NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) Newcastle and Leeds Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Training Event, which brings together established researchers in rheumatology.

This is a meeting that has been held annually in York for many years, and this was the first time it had been hosted at Newcastle. As well as a showcase in which trainee doctors, health and care professionals and discovery/translational scientists from across the two regions present their work, the NYRM is also a forum to hear from local and national keynote speakers. This year we celebrated the local leadership of Professor Chris Lamb (Professor of Gastroenterology, Newcastle University) and Professor Heidi Siddle (Professor of Musculoskeletal Health, University of Leeds); we also welcomed Dr Laura Coates (Associate Professor of Rheumatology, University of Oxford). As well as sharing their insights, each speaker also gave excellent overviews of their own academic career pathways to inspire and encourage. Around 140 people attended the meeting.

The one day event was co-convened by Dr. Arthur Pratt, NIHR Newcastle BRC Academic Career Development Lead, with colleagues from Newcastle and Leeds BRCs, and sessions on Translational Science, Clinical Cases, Service Improvement and Clinical Science were held. Prizes are given for the abstracts judged to be best in some categories, and the winners are soon to be announced! We thank our sponsors from the pharmaceutical industry for supporting this educational event, and colleagues at the Faculty for Medical Sciences at Newcastle University for administrative expertise.
