A new review examines endocrine manifestations and developments in mitochondrial disease research.

The review is supported by the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre's (BRC) Neuromuscular Disease Theme. It brings together researchers across Newcastle University and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to address the major developments in mitochondrial disease over the past decade.

Mitochondrial disease is one of the most commonly inherited metabolic disorders. This review, which was published in Endocrine Reviews, looks at the advances in knowledge of mitochondrial disease. Focusing on the role of mitochondrial abnormalities causing endocrine problems, new developments in diagnosis and emerging therapies, and how these advances in our understanding of mitochondrial disease are influencing patient management.
