Professor Neil Rajan, Associate Deputy Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC): Newcastle and Co-Lead for the Skin Disease, Oral Disease and Immunogenomics research theme, has been featured in RARE Revolution Magazine.

In the article, "Healthy skin for all: Inside the BAD Skin Genetics Group's genomic revolution", Professor Rajan reflects on the progress made in understanding the genetic causes of skin conditions and how genomic testing is becoming an increasingly important part of routine dermatology care to help clinicians diagnose rare skin diseases more accurately, develop targeted treatments and build stronger partnerships with patients and families.

As Chair of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) Skin Genetics Group, he highlights the group's role in advancing genomic literacy, supporting national registries, shaping policy and developing educational resources for healthcare professionals, following BAD’s mission ‘healthy skin for all’. The article also emphasises the importance of collaboration between researchers, clinicians and patient organisations to ensure people living with rare skin conditions are better represented in research and healthcare services.

Looking to the future, Professor Rajan describes the exciting potential of gene therapies, gene editing and other emerging technologies to transform care for people with rare skin diseases.
